Started by New Leaf Columbus, LLC in New Leaf Wants to Hear From YOU!. Last reply by Debra James Tucker May 9. 1 Reply

As plans for Columbus' 2012 Pride have picked up steam, some people have shared a desire to have a community-wide group of LGBTQ people of color and our allies to walk together in the Pride Parade this year. So, to determine if there is significant interest in this idea the group that has been planning events asked that I poll the community to see if people would sign up to participate? In addition, we would like to see if one or two people would volunteer to step up and help with coordinating the walking group? If you would like to take part in the walking  group or to coordinate the walking group please respond to this forum discussion.Thank you and let's make this year's Pride Festival one of the most diverse ever!Sincerely,Aaron, New Leaf ColumbusContinue

Sign the petition, Execute Justice - Eliminate the Death Penalty in Ohio.

Ohio HB 160 eliminates the death penalty and replaces it with Life Without a Chance of Parole. The bill was introduced this spring and it has had one hearing in the House Criminal Justice Committee. The bill is scheduled to have proponent testimony in committee within the next few weeks. That's why I signed a petition to The Ohio State House, which says:"It's time that Ohio ends the Death Penalty. Show your support by encouraging the members of the Criminal Justice Committee in the Ohio House to vote in favor of HB 160."Will you sign the petition too? December 5, 2011Response Requested: NASTAD and NCSD Institutional and Community AssessmentIn January 2011, NASTAD and the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) received funding from the MAC AIDS Fund to mount an unprecedented, targeted effort across the silos of HIV and STDs to examine and address stigma in public health practice, particularly among Black and Latino gay men/MSM.One central activity supported by this MAC funding is a comprehensive survey which aims to:§ Assess stigma at the institution/community levels, thus items focus on institutional and community practices (as opposed to individual behaviors);§ Examine multiple dimensions of stigma that may negatively impact public health practice, institutions and thwart implementation of efforts aimed to increase sexual health and reduce HIV and STD risk among gay men/MSM in the U.S.This effort is consistent with approaches identified in the…Continue

President Obama Announces Strategy on International LGBT Human Rights

Started by New Leaf Columbus, LLC in News/World Affairs Dec 12, 2011. 0 Replies

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton articulated the first-ever U.S. Government strategy to direct all federal agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. These actions represent a continuation of the Obama Administration’s commitment to safety, justice, and equality for LGBT people everywhere. President Obama expressed this commitment earlier this year at the United Nations General Assembly, when he said “No country should deny people their rights because of who they love, which is why we must stand up for the rights of gays and lesbians everywhere.” And since January 2009, Secretary Clinton has strongly and consistently championed a comprehensive human rights agenda — one that specifically includes the protection of LGBT people.I hope you share my excitement about these recent developments – powerful examples of the…Continue

Over the past three years, there have been several discussions about starting a New Leaf Columbus Book Club. However, getting from discussion to launch of the book club seems to always meet with challenges whereas the launch doe not occur. With all that said, recently New Leaf Columbus member Charlie Frederick suggested a book that he read and thought would be a good book to share with members of New Leaf Columbus. Also, the thinking was that with the addition of Chat Feature here on New Leaf that the discussion of the book can be done here on New Leaf using the Chat Feature. The book that Charlie suggested is Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex edited by Eric A. Stanley and Nat Smith.  Angela Y. Davis had this to say about the book: "Captive Genders is an exciting assemblage of…Continue

Why Marriage Equality Matters: A Coming Out Story

Posted by Siobhan on May 15, 2012 at 12:50pm 0 Comments

I was a perverted child, destined for a life as a moral degenerate, outside the grace of our Creator and segregated from the fellowship of a church family.

Or so I thought.  At age 9.

Cause by age 9, or thereabouts, I knew that the sight of a woman’s breasts (curse you SkineMax) did something in my belly that it didn’t do for other little girls.  I had an urge to kiss girls and hold their hands and make them mine.  I felt cursed by my lack of penis, stuffing my pants with socks…

Rose DeWitt Bukater: It's unfair.

Ruth DeWitt Bukater: Of course it's unfair. We're women. Our choices are never easy.

You may not recognize the quote, but I'm sure you know the movie it's from: Titanic (1997), re-released a few weeks ago to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the domed maiden voyage. My cousin and I, sappy teens when the movie was first released and still romantic saps to this day, were part of…

Co-Parenting Equality: Lessons from NOM

Posted by Siobhan on April 1, 2012 at 7:31pm 0 Comments

My munchkin lives in two houses.  His father and I (look, some of us lie to ourselves a little longer than others), no longer romantically involved for some years now, co-parent.  That means we're sharing information, talking daily, acknowledging the feelings and opinions of the other, and trusting one another to be responsible parents.  Our dedication to this formula has paid off tremendously.  Munchkin is happy, healthy... and has rarely, oh so rarely, dared to play one of us against the…

The director acknowledged her movie doesn't have the most commercial premise. "You say, 'black' -- 'Oh no,'" she said recounting a (hypothetical?) meeting with financiers. "You say, 'lesbian' -- 'Oh no.' You say, 'coming of age,' they're like, 'Next meeting.'"

The GLBT Youth Support Project Mission: To ensure safe and supportive communities for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) youth. We are also the friends, family members, teachers, mentors, and allies of anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t fit in, gay or straight. We pledge to talk to the kids in our lives to put an end to the hate, violence, and tragedy — and to offer advice on coping, strategies to make it better, and to remind kids that It Gets Better.

President Obama Joins the Project!
As part of the It Gets Better Project, President Obama shares his message of hope and support for LGBT youth who are struggling with being bullied.
